Discovery Session
Take a breath. Give yourself some space. Discover your humanity.
We know how you feel. As much as you want to discover ways to keep growing your ministry, the truth is you probably need a minute, right? After what we have experienced collectively, specifically as ministry leaders over the last 2 years, you just need the space to be; to be present with your own emotions; to be aware of what’s happening in your own hearts, away from the sometimes overwhelming nature of ministry. You could probably use a little time to breathe, decompress, and invest in you as a whole human.
That’s why we created the Discovery Sessions. These experiences are designed for you to reflect, reset, and return to your “why.”
Say What You Need to Say is a reflection experience designed to explore the power of words and how we can use them to help us reconnect with our own humanity, with others, and with God. This experience will be an ongoing, repeating reflection during each breakout. It is designed for you to opt-in at any time, or you can plan ahead by registering early!
Mindfulness in Motion is an audio experience designed to guide you into spending time being present in mind, body, and spirit. This experience will be a self-paced audio practice that you can download on your mobile phone and use at any time.
Since both of these experiences will be an ongoing, repeating reflection during each breakout, it is designed for you to opt-in at any time, or you can plan ahead by registering early!
The Social Dilemma of Human Technology
Filters, streaks, TikTok trends, likes, and follows. The digital universe isn’t necessarily bad, but there are elements of these tech products that often cause teenagers in our ministries to act and feel less-than-human. Join Max Stossel, Youth & Education Advisor to the Center for Humane Technology to for an open discussion about how technology is affecting the teenagers in our communities, and what we can do about it.

Why We Need to Be Relentless about Racial Reconciliation
There’s a generation inside and outside the Church watching how we respond to human struggles perpetuated by racism in our communities. But these struggles aren’t only represented by what’s happening in the news—racism is historically significant in our theology and ministry practice as well. While some dismiss or elevate racism as part of a political agenda, there are a growing number of Christians who believe how we navigate justice and reconciliation will directly impact the faith of a generation. Join Albert Tate as he gives practical insights for examining how we see and understand each other so we can know how to love each other as Jesus called us to love.
Teenage Humans Serving Humans
For the past decade, Christian research has suggested that there’s a direct correlation between service and spiritual formation. Simply understanding the brain development of teenagers and their increased desire for adventure and purpose should make us rethink how we program. Yet, there’s a tendency during the teenage phase to make events and environments more important than consistent opportunities to serve. Spend time with other leaders to reimagine ways youth ministry can put service at the center of the strategy to disciple a generation.
How to Create Experiences Teenagers Love to Attend
There are more digital opportunities to learn about God and grow in discipleship than ever before—and that’s a great thing! At the same time, research indicates that young people are still looking for physical spaces to show up and be with other humans. Now like never before, we have to re-imagine physical experiences so they excel at the things that can only happen with physical proximity. Join us for a conversation about how to completely re-imagine your ministry experience so teenagers will want to attend.
Re-Inspiring Volunteers in a New Reality
It’s no secret that the past few years have created new challenges for recruiting and retaining volunteers. Yet in order to effectively disciple teenagers, we need to re-engage volunteers to show up—even if the volunteer roles for youth ministry are shifting. In this session, we’ll share what some of the most innovative ministries are learning about volunteerism and how we can develop a volunteer culture where every relationship matters.

Equip Volunteers to Have More Human Conversations with Students
The teenagers in your ministry are searching for answers to their three biggest questions: Who am I? Where do I fit? What difference can I make? But young people need caring adults who are willing to lean in with empathy, practice listening, and walk with them in the direction of better answers. Based on new landmark research from the Fuller Youth Institute and examples from churches like yours, this breakout will help you equip volunteers with practical conversation and connection ideas to help teenagers move forward in their discipleship journeys.
What Parents Aren’t Telling You, but You Need to Know
No one will have more influence on a teenager’s faith than their parent or caregiver. The good news is, most caregivers are not anti-faith, they’re actually looking for a version of faith that will shape their teenager’s sense of worth and purpose. But according to the latest research, most parents say they don’t feel supported nurturing their teenager’s faith at home. Join us as we reveal some of the latest findings on what grown-up humans raising teenagers really need, and discover how you can re-imagine the way every leader and volunteer can partner with parents in the decade ahead.

Communicating to Teenage Humans
The world is louder than it’s ever been. There are thousands of distractions, noises, and shiny objects fighting for our attention. How, in this chaos, do you clearly communicate an idea? How do you share a vision for the future or a sermon or a talk with a room full of teenagers? How do you meet students where they are with an engaging message that’s relevant for their lives? Join Ashley Bohinc and Stuart Hall as they break down some practical tips so you can engage and inspire the next generation.
Partnering with Public Schools
The experience a teenager has at school is more influential than the experience they have in youth ministry for one reason: time. Yet many schools find themselves ill-equipped to provide the kind of experience teenagers need for success. How can youth ministry be part of the solution when our attempts to partner with local schools often feel ineffective, or impossible (sometimes we’re not even allowed in). In this session, we’ll explore emerging strategies for redefining the way youth ministry can partner with public schools for the sake of teenage humans everywhere.

What’s Changing in Youth Culture?
Name something that changes faster than youth culture. We’ll wait . . . Most days it feels impossible to keep up with all the new platforms, acronyms, code words, and trends. So how do we stay relevant? The great news is, you don’t have to know the latest TikTok trends to build an effective ministry, but you do need to understand Gen Z and how their values are changing. Join Dr. Josh Packard as he discusses the latest Springtide Research and how we can better understand teenage humans.

LGBTQIA+ Conversations
According to 2021 survey data from Gallup, one in six Gen Z adult humans identify as LGBTQ. As ministry leaders, what do we need to understand about gender and sexuality? And, how can we lead our own ministry in a way where volunteers and parents feel equipped for conversations with the humans they love?
What Everyday Leaders Can Do for a Generation in Despair
We don’t need to look far to see that young people are navigating unprecedented levels of anxiety and depression. Suicide remains the second leading cause of death for teens. How are our ministries and volunteers equipped to respond to the growing mental health crisis of teenage humans? Join authors Will Hutcherson and Dr. Chinwe Williams as they blend both clinical research and real-life stories to provide simple—yet powerful—tools any adult can use to help a generation in despair.
Digital Discipleship for Students in 2022 and Beyond
If we want to help students develop an everyday faith, we have to connect with them in their everyday worlds. That’s why digital discipleship will continue to be an important topic in the future of youth ministry. This breakout will explore some important shifts in our mindset & strategy along with some practical steps toward implementing a digital strategy we can leverage to inspire faith in this generation because we all know it will take more than simply live-streaming our in-person services.
Leading Up: Managing Adaptive Change in Youth Ministry
If there was ever a time to level up in change leadership, it’s now. Whether we like it or not, change is happening all around us. “Adapt or die” is often a phrase we hear, but that can feel overwhelming. What if we could learn to manage and lead adaptive change in ways that feel empowering and life-giving? The good news is you can—and be human at the same time. This breakout will equip you with tools to thrive while you lead.

Lead Yourself
As a leader, the most important person you lead is yourself. This often-overlooked priority may be the one that’s most essential to longevity in youth ministry, effectiveness in leading volunteers, and discipling a generation with a faith that lasts. Join 40 year youth ministry veteran Doug Fields in a conversation that will help you discover the skills, habits and attitudes every youth leader needs for success in the ability to lead yourself well.

Reconstructing Faith for a Culture That’s Deconstructing
The word “deconstruction” can elicit a range of emotional responses from ministry leaders. But chances are, if you’re in youth ministry, it’s something you’ve been talking about. So, what is deconstruction? Join us as we talk about what deconstruction is, what it isn’t, and how to help teenage (and adult) humans develop a resilient faith that can be fueled by critical thinking and safe conversations.
It’s Just a Phase—So Don’t Miss It
If you’ve spent any time with teenagers you know that the human you meet in sixth grade is very different from that same human only three years later. And sophomores have very different ways of thinking, managing relationships, social characteristics, and even ministry participation than seniors. So, if the developmental differences are this obvious, why would we teach teenagers all the same way? In this breakout, we’ll talk about the unique phases of development during the teenage years and how each one presents specific opportunities we can leverage to develop an everyday faith.
Engaging Teenagers with Special Needs
As a student ministry leader, you plan events that are designed to entice students and draw them in. But are your environments designed from the ground up with every student in mind? In this breakout, you will be taught (from personal experience) how you can integrate students with special needs into your weekly activities. You won’t have to recreate your entire ministry—we’ll just show you how to look at it from another angle.
